Ein eigenes auch aus der Antike stammendes Thema, das sich in vielen Formen im siebzehnten und achtzehnten Jahrhundert findet, ist die Darstellung der schlafenden Frau, die von Männern beobachtet wird. Giorgiones "Schlafende Venus" in Dresden entspricht dem antiken Bild, stellt aber gleichzeitig ein neu definiertes ideal der Hochzeitssymbole dar. Das prähistorische Bild der Frau wird am Beispiel der "Schlafenden Frau" des Hypogäums in Malta analysiert, jenes der Antike an Hand von Gedichten Propertius' und der Ariadne in den Museen des Vatikan. / Das Thema der schlafenden Frau in der Kunst wird aus einer Perspektive untersucht, die die Frage wiederanschneidet, wie Künstler zu verschiedenen Zeiten die schlafende Frau abgebildet haben und was dies über die Mann-Frau Beziehung aussagt. Les oeuvres de Lygia Clark, Yayyoi Kusama, Colette, Natalia LL, Rimma Gerlovina, Valie Export et Ulrike Rosenbach sont étudiées dans cet article. Depuis 1960 la représentation artistique s'est développée dans une perspective totalement nouvelle: les femmes dominent la scène et pour la première fois depuis la préhistoire l'identité féminine s'exprime à travers l'image des femmes endormies. Le voyeurisme est renforcé dans le regard moderne sur les femmes endormies, chez Gustave Courbet et Jean-Baptiste Reiter comme dans les premières photographies mais l'oeuvre de Redon et celle de Brancusi retrouvent une nouvelle dimension cosmique.
